GMAB™ Flue Gas Cleaning
Achieve cost-effective energy recovery for district or local heating grids by condensing water in flue gases. Energy recovery efficiency is enGMAB maintains a recognized strength and long tradition in building complete flue gas treatment systems for waste-to-energy plants. Our experienced engineering team, project expertise and reliable designs allow us to deliver high-quality state-of-the-art technologies, whether dry, semi-wet, wet, or a combination of these solutions is needed.
ADIOX® Dioxin Removal
The ADIOX® dioxin removal process is based on the high affinity of dioxins to carbon. By dispersing small particles of carbon in PP-plastics, a material excellent for dioxin abatement is produced.
A dioxin molecule that is present in the flue gas is initially absorbed into the PP and then migrating to a carbon particle where it is strongly adsorbed (connected to its surface). The plastic material acts as a selective membrane with a preference for molecules like dioxins. When the service life of the ADIOX material has come to an end, the material is incinerated. The dioxins are destroyed during the incineration process and removed from the ecocycle.
Tower packings and droplet separators, produced of ADIOX material, can be installed in wet, saturated and dry applications.
Heat Recovery
Modern incineration plants are equipped with a boiler system, transforming a major part of the energy content in the flue gases into steam. The steam generates electric power in turbine generators and produces heat in turbine condensers. The heat is fed into a district heating system.
Flue Gas Condensation
We have taken the recovery of energy one step further. By cooling the flue gas to below its dew point, it is possible to recover large quantities of latent heat. If the flue gas temperature after the boiler is approximately 150ºC it is possible by means of flue gas condensation, to increase the energy efficiency by up to 20%.
Condensation may take place either as a direct heat exchange between gas and district heating water, in some cases utilizing an intermediate cooling water circuit, and/or by using an intermediate heat pump. For optimum energy efficiency, a combination of these methods are used.
Polishing Scrubbers
We specialize in wet flue gas cleaning combined with advanced water treatment technologies. Our wet scrubber systems provide reliable and efficient flue gas treatment, tailored to meet stringent environmental standards.
Our scrubber systems offer reliable emissions control, ensuring consistent and effective removal of pollutants from flue gases. They are designed for continuous operation with high availability, allowing for uninterrupted performance. With exceptional buffer capacity, they easily adapt to handle peak variations in gas flow, ensuring smooth and efficient operation even under changing conditions.
Additionally, our systems minimize chemical consumption and generate very low residue, making them an eco-friendly choice for flue gas treatment. They are also perfect for integration with flue gas condensation, enabling enhanced energy recovery and increased overall system efficiency. Our scrubber systems have been successfully installed across Europe, delivering excellent results in both emissions control and energy recovery. Achieve superior environmental compliance with our advanced wet scrubber systems.
Our versatile single-stage or multi-stage polishing scrubbers are designed to achieve ultra-low emissions, even in plants that were originally built to meet older, less stringent emission standards.
By incorporating energy recovery into the polishing scrubber, we can cool the gas through flue gas condensation. This process not only further reduces emissions but also boosts the production of district heat and generates a relatively clean condensate. This condensate can be upgraded for various uses, such as boiler make-up water.
The combination of low operating temperatures and extremely low emissions makes these scrubbers ideal for integrating Carbon Capture technology downstream. As a result, installing a GMAB™ polishing scrubber not only enhances current performance but also ensures the plant is prepared for future environmental regulations and technological advancements.
GMAB™ offers standardized gas treatment scrubbers based on our different gas treatment technologies including acids removal, gas condensation, ADIOX dioxin removal. The units are compact and designed for a minimum on-site erection work.
Innovative Technologies
Since its inception, GMAB™ has been at the forefront of innovation and product development. In the late 1980s, GMAB became the pioneer in implementing flue gas condensation in Waste-to-Energy plants. This groundbreaking step set the stage for numerous advancements in the field. One of their notable innovations is ADIOX, a technology for dioxin removal developed in collaboration with the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology. This technology has been successfully installed in over 140 incineration lines, showcasing its effectiveness and reliability.
Another significant development by GMAB is MercOx™, a wet scrubber technology designed for mercury capture, including elemental mercury (Hg°), utilizing hydrogen peroxide. This technology ensures efficient mercury removal, contributing to cleaner emissions.
GMAB also introduced Sulfur Recirculation, a technology aimed at reducing high-temperature corrosion and dioxin formation in Waste-to-Energy plants. This innovation enhances the longevity and efficiency of the plants.
For NOx reduction in grate-fired furnaces, GMAB developed CUTNOX®, a primary measure that involves injecting an air-water jet into the furnace. This method effectively reduces NOx emissions, making the process more environmentally friendly.
The ReZinc® process is another remarkable innovation by GMAB. It uses scrubber effluents to leach fly ash, producing a zinc-rich product that can be used to produce recycled zinc. The leached fly ash is then recirculated back into the incineration process, detoxifying the fly ash, destroying dioxins, and contributing to the production of recycled zinc. This process not only detoxifies waste but also recovers valuable materials, promoting a circular economy.
